ज्ञानकर्मसंन्यासयोगो नाम चतुर्थोऽध्यायः ॥4॥
Introduction
In Chapter 03, Lord Krishna explained the importance of Karma Yoga — performing actions without attachment.
In this chapter, Krishna reveals deeper spiritual knowledge and explains the relationship between knowledge and action.
👉 He also reveals his divine nature and purpose of incarnation.
Divine Origin of Knowledge
Krishna explains that this sacred knowledge of Yoga is eternal.
- He first taught it to the Sun God (Vivasvan)
- It was passed down through generations
- Over time, it was lost
👉 Krishna now teaches it again to Arjuna.
The Divine Incarnation (Avatar)
Krishna reveals that although he is unborn and eternal, he takes birth whenever necessary.
👉 Whenever there is:
- Decline of righteousness (Dharma)
- Rise of unrighteousness (Adharma)
He incarnates to:
- Protect the good
- Destroy evil
- Restore Dharma
Importance of Right Knowledge
Krishna emphasizes that true knowledge removes ignorance.
👉 A wise person understands:
- The difference between action and inaction
- The true nature of the self
- That the soul is eternal
Knowledge leads to freedom from confusion and doubt.
Action vs Inaction
One of the deepest teachings in this chapter is:
👉 “What is action? What is inaction?”
Krishna explains:
- Even while acting, a wise person remains detached
- True inaction is not laziness, but freedom from ego and attachment
👉 This is the essence of Karma Yoga with knowledge.
Different Types of Sacrifice (Yajna)
Krishna describes various types of spiritual practices (Yajnas):
- Sacrifice of material possessions
- Sacrifice of senses
- Sacrifice of breath (pranayama)
- Sacrifice of knowledge
👉 Among all, knowledge sacrifice (Jnana Yajna) is the highest.
Role of a Guru
Krishna advises Arjuna to seek knowledge from a realized teacher.
👉 Approach a Guru with:
- Humility
- Questions
- Service
A true teacher will guide you toward truth and self-realization.
Power of Knowledge
Knowledge is compared to fire.
👉 Just as fire burns everything to ashes:
- Knowledge destroys past karma
- Removes ignorance
- Brings clarity and peace
Even the greatest sinner can cross over ignorance through true knowledge.
Key Learnings
- Divine knowledge is eternal
- God incarnates to restore Dharma
- Knowledge removes ignorance
- True action is performed without attachment
- Guru guidance is essential
- Knowledge leads to liberation
Conclusion
Jnana Karma Sanyasa Yoga teaches that knowledge and action are not separate — they complement each other.
When actions are performed with right understanding and without attachment, they lead to spiritual freedom.
By gaining true knowledge, we rise above confusion, break the cycle of karma, and move toward self-realization.
